Goal

Autarki is designed to help people discover their inner strengths—those universal qualities that guide us in making thoughtful choices in a chaotic world. The experience focuses on bringing calmness, peace, and understanding to our lives. As participants explore Autarki, they embark on a journey of self-discovery, reflecting on how they see the world and connect with others. By encouraging greater awareness of ourselves and our connections, Autarki builds empathy and kindness within communities. Ultimately, this experience inspires us to work together towards a more mindful and harmonious way of living.

Result

As the Art Director and Illustrator for Autarki, we developed a unique visual style for the card game centered on archetypes and self-knowledge. We created a diverse range of characters to represent different archetypes, carefully avoiding stereotypes such as depicting heroes only as men. The goal was to make sure the illustrations were inclusive and reflective of a wide variety of personal experiences. Each card was designed to support players in exploring different aspects of their identity and personal growth. By focusing on thoughtful and diverse design, we aimed to make the game accessible to a broad audience, enriching the journey of self-discovery and connection through meaningful and engaging visuals.

In Autarki, the main cards showcase the personalities of 12 archetypes, each with three main characteristics. Each archetype features three types of cards: Faces, which display core traits; Lights, which emphasize strengths to develop; and Shadows, which reveal areas of weakness to understand and address. This setup helps players connect with their own traits and gain self-awareness. We created a distinctive visual style, ensuring diverse and inclusive representations. We illustrated characters to reflect various archetypes, avoiding stereotypes. For example, the Explorer card includes a mechanical leg representing accessibility, and the Lover card features diverse body types and ethnicities. These details make each archetype relatable and help players see themselves in the game. The Lights cards focus on strengths and positive qualities, while the Shadows cards highlight areas for growth and understanding. This balance supports players in their journey towards personal development.
